I recently gave a presentation on BookCrossing at the Mensa Annual Gathering, so I feel like I ought to state how I feel about the even more recent changes to the website. Much has changed in the last month, and I can see how it would be confusing to somebody who has now out-of-date information I had given them.

In a nutshell, the BookCrossing PTBs rolled out a new version of the website, and this update drastically restructured the features available at the two levels of membership (paying and non-paying). Lots of members got extremely ticked off, and some left in a big huff. I am not one of them.

Do I think the revisions could have been handled better? Yes, I do.

One of the biggest changes was that non-paying members were limited to a very small number of forum posts and private messages (PMs) per month. The initial outcry was so vehement that BookCrossing relented and increased this number to a more reasonable level. I believe a little more research and a bit of a heads-up could have saved them some grief there. There are some who think that the forums and PMs should be free and unlimited to everybody, but it seems to me that this was a logical place to cut back on features for non-paying members. The forums are a huge money pit, and one can be an extremely active BookCrosser without so much as dipping a toe into the forums. (One could even argue that the forums are such a time-suck that a "good" BookCrosser would be reading or releasing books instead of hanging out in the forums.) There are also plenty of online meeting places (Vox, LiveJournal, Facebook, Yahoogroups, etc) for BookCrossers who want some virtual socializing. Limiting PMs has the biggest negative impact on two groups--spammers and organizers. Limiting the spammers (and book-leeches) is a good thing. I do feel for the members who like to organize meetings and bookrings and such but who have a hard time paying for membership, though. But there are ways around this. Again, there are plenty of off-site resources that could be utilized by non-paying members who'd like to stay involved in the larger community, and their profiles could be updated to tell everybody where they're hanging out now.

Though that is another bone of contention. Apparently the new version of the website automatically shut down profile updates for non-paying members. Without warning. Not good. It's one thing to limit the profile space allotted to a non-paying member, but to refuse updates just seems wrong to me. I don't see how that benefits anybody. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I think there have been some compromises since then. I'd like to hear comments from anybody more knowledgeable regarding this aspect of the site change.

There have been various other changes to the site (some for the better, some not so much, and some neutral) that should have been explained in advance. Like the wishlist feature. And the added "preferences" and their default settings. And the changes to the releasing interface. But I think people will gradually get used to them.

I have heard a lot of complaints about the site being a "business" now instead of the labor of love Ron Hornbaker created. But the essential features of the site (not to mention some nifty non-essential features) are still completely free, and if Ron and the other original founders hadn't spun it off as a true business when they did, it would have collapsed under a mountain of bills. Just because it's a business and its owners would like to make a profit (or at least break even), that doesn't mean that I shouldn't express my delight with the product. Just like I pay for Flickr membership and tell others how much I enjoy it. Just like I make payments on my PT Cruiser and wear my PT Cruiser watch and my PT Cruiser bracelet and put a little parade of model PT Cruisers on my desk at work. So the BookCrossing site isn't perfect, and it isn't unlimitedly free. But what is? All in all, I still love BookCrossing, I'm staying (and paying when I can), and I will continue to promote it.

What project are you working on right now that's not work related?

Funny you should ask. I was just getting ready to post about it in hopes of getting some people to help out. Some of you may already know me as stinalyn over on the BookCrossing.com site, and I am presenting an "Introduction to BookCrossing.com" workshop on July 3rd at Mensa's Annual Gathering in Denver, Colorado. Part of the presentation will be to allow each participant (while supplies last) to take a book that has already been registered on the site, add an online journal entry, and then release it to continue its trackable journey. I'm toting along several books myself to release in this fashion, and other BookCrossers have already pitched in, sending books to me and to the helpful Denverites listed on the MensaAG BookCrossing profile that I set up to facilitate this project.

How can you help? Well, I highly recommend joining BookCrossing, if you haven't already. It's free, the site won't spam you, and it's as anonymous as you want to make it. (For instance, nobody knows veteran BookCrosser watchcat's true identity. We suspect she is really Paris Hilton.) Once you've joined, you can use the site's private message system to "PM" one of the helpful Denverites about sending them a book or two that you've registered on BookCrossing and are ready to release into the world, and they can see that it makes it to me at the convention hotel.

And even if you don't feel ready to join the fabulous community of bibliophiles that is BookCrossing, you can send me a message through Vox if you'd still like to help out somehow.

And, like it says in the MensaAG profile page, we're planning on a public (neither Mensa nor BookCrossing membership required) get-together, probably the evening of Saturday, July 5th. So if you're in Denver that day, keep watching that profile for an announcement of the exact when and where. We'd love to introduce you to our community!

That didn't help me much with DV stats, but I did learn a lot of useful stuff, and I got confirmation that the stuff I'm learning in grad school really is valued in the professional world. On the drive down to Phoenix, I got to see Oak Creek Canyon and spend some time in Sedona. That was really neat because I got to visit one of my SMFS friends, author Kris Neri, who now owns a bookstore in Sedona. On the way back, I stopped at Sunset Point, a memorial to DOT workers killed in the line of duty, and took a few shots.

There is a BookCrossing readalong of Les Misérables that started this month. As I had a copy I've been meaning to read for decades now, I decided to take part (even though I knew I'd be lagging behind due to schoolwork). It's an older copy. It has no date, and the wording on the title page seemed to imply that Monsieur Hugo was still alive at the time of publication. (And yes, in the Daily Times interview, I did stress that it was a guess, not a fact, but confusing the two seems to be something at which reporters excel.)

Some googling, however, suggests that the volume was published in 1920. Despite its relative youth, it is considered "rare" (whatever that means), and is simply too delicate for casual reading. So I am shelving it in the "permanent collection."

Now, what to read for the readalong?? Last night I went out and bought the Signet Classics paperback edition, all 1463 pages of it. And I started to read it. And beyond the first paragraph, it bears absolutely no resemblance to the older translation I had been reading! None. Nada. Zilch. It's a completely different book. So which translation is "right"?? Am I going to have to read this thing in the original French in order to keep from wondering if I've ever really read the book?

This past September was more a month of lasts than a month of firsts. But I suppose it could be argued that I looked at things with a new perspective as I said goodbye.

At the beginning of the month, I went to the annual CSC retreat at Lake of the Ozarks, as I have done many, many times in the past. My parents met at Mizzou in the '60s, and they were both members of the First Christian Church's Christian Student Congregation, a club that held a retreat at one of the lake's group campgrounds every Labor Day weekend.

They continued this tradition well past graduation and I grew up knowing that Labor Day weekend = CSC retreat. Simple as that. But the attendance has dropped off in recent years as the old-timers die off and the younger generations scatter and develop their own holiday traditions. So this was the last gathering at Camp Clover Point. No more gin rummy in the mess hall till 2AM. No more mini-golf and frozen custard outings to Osage Beach. No more homilies and hymns in the wilderness. And some of the people I met there -- people who have helped shape my life -- I may never see again.

Okay, okay, you want a first. Fine. I learned how to play Mexican Train Dominoes.

At least I think I did. The rules that came with the game were a little vague, and we tried out several different interpretations. However, none of them made for a truly satisfactory gaming experience, so we suspect we missed something somewhere.

On the drive back to my parents' new place in Ridgeway, I stopped in to say goodbye to the house I grew up in. This was the first time I'd been back there since they cleared it out and put it on the market.

— By Alysa Landry —

The Daily Times

FARMINGTON — More than two tons of books line the walls of Christina Branson's Farmington home.

The 37-year-old administrative assistant for the city of Aztec began reading at age 3 and hasn't stopped.

"I remember pulling the medical encyclopedia off the shelf when I was about 4," she said. "The phobias really interested me."

Following her precocious debut into the literary world, Branson settled on something a little less diagnostic — mysteries. She burrowed through the Encyclopedia Brown books at age 5, and went on to the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew series. She was well acquainted with Agatha Christie by age 8.

The love of the written word only blossomed with time, and Branson is now part of a global craze that is half treasure hunt, half literary madness — a craze gaining popularity in the Four Corners.

Bookcrossing, a treasure hunt designed for readers, started from a single stack of books nearly seven years ago, and founders call it the world's biggest free book club.

Bookcrossing.com is the brainchild of co-founders Ron Hornbaker and Heather Meara-Pederson — two avid readers who noticed their books were gathering dust.

Inspired by the likes of Where's George and Photo Tag, Internet sites that, respectively, track $1 bills and disposable cameras, the founders built an online treasure hunt. The treasure, of course, is found inside the covers of the 4.6 million books registered on the site.

The book hunt is based on the theory that two things change a person's life — the people he meets and the books he reads, Meara-Pederson said. The site facilitates both objectives.

"Books aren't doing anybody any good up there on the shelf gathering dust," she said. "This is a generous and serendipitous game. You never know who is going to pick up the book or what it's going to do in their lives."

Books in circulation span genres from children's literature to science fiction novels, and from used textbooks to first-edition antiques. About 100 free books are lying around in coffee shops and store fronts in the state, and more than 2,200 New Mexico readers are participating in the hunt.

Branson joined the online community five years ago, and since then she's built a virtual library. From her dining room table surrounded by stacks of books, she logs on and has instant access to millions of books — and thousands of like-minded readers.

Every book Branson owns is registered on the site, she said. She regularly browses other users' libraries and requests to borrow their books, which are sent through the mail. Branson also lends her books to readers across the nation, but a few of her favorites don't leave the house.

"I have a lot of autographed books, so I hang on to those," she said. "I have a copy of The Count of Monte Cristo' that's so old it doesn't have a copyright in it, and a copy of Les Miserables' printed when the author was still alive."

Although these treasures stay at Branson's home, they provide fodder for conversations with other bookcrossers, via the online forums.

The site is a sort of book-lover's paradise, Branson said. She doesn't have cable television, choosing instead to spend much of her time with her nose in a book or discussing plots and characters with other readers.

"Reading gives me knowledge," she said. "I always learn something. Even in fiction books there's always a little tidbit of information I didn't know before. And when books are set in exotic places, I get to learn a little bit about it even when I don't have the money to go there."

Bookcrossing.com gains a following of about 300 readers every day, with membership topping 625,000, said Scott Sorochak, CEO of Bookcrossing. Half of the registered users are in the United States, but readers in more than 120 countries have participated. About 65 percent of users are women, and 75 percent are between the ages of 30 and 60.

As the Internet gains popularity, libraries are losing patrons, Sorochak said, but bookcrossers get the best of both worlds.

"Part of bookcrossing is getting back to the basics with reading," he said. "With the advent of the iPod and video games and the fact that you can do all your research for school papers online, libraries are becoming ghost towns. Bookcrossing brings it full circle."

As more people join bookcrossing, more books are beginning the journey around the world.

"There are many things to do with a book beyond reading it," Sorochak said. "It's what you do with the book after you read it that bridges the gap."

To find a book, log on to www.bookcrossing.com, and click the "go hunting" tab on the left. Books set free by other readers are listed by city. To release a book, register online and include a description of where the book is hidden.

I did quite a lot of reading this year, but I actually finished only 59 books. Of those 59, 50 were fiction books (novels or anthologies) and 9 were non-fiction. Sixteen of the 59 were audiobooks. Five of the 59 were registered by other BookCrossers, so they counted for the "Keep Them Moving" challenge, as I did release them. In these 59 books, I read works by 47 authors who were new to me. Had I been doing the A-Z challenge, I would have come up short by 10 letters: E, I, O, Q, T, U, V, X, Y, and Z.

My favorite book of 2007 was probably Sarah Caudwell's The Sibyl in Her Grave.
